ADMISSION TERMS AND ENTRANCE EXAMINATION
second-cycle MASTER'S STUDIES (2-year)              

A candidate wishing to enter second-cycle studies, regardless of the programme, must hold a diploma of first-cycle, second-cycle or five-year Master’s programme completion. Admission is based on the results of the competitive entrance examination.

Second-cycle programmes are also offered to Polish citizens holding diplomas of higher education obtained outside Poland that are recognised or considered equivalent to certificates issued in Poland, in accordance with the relevant laws in force in Poland.


Programme: COMPOSITION AND THEORY OF MUSIC (FULL-TIME)

Specialty: COMPOSITION

Review of music scores for three to five self-prepared compositions for various ensembles

Candidates should submit music scores for three to five self-prepared compositions for various ensembles by 30 June 2020. Music scores should be submitted in an electronic form and uploaded to the dedicated folder of the CANDIDATE ELECTRONIC FILE on the disc the access to which will be provided by the Education and Student Affairs Department to the email address provided in the admission form in the pdf format or in the form of a scan, or photos of legible handwritten scores in an electronic version in the pdf format. On the examination date the Education and Student Affairs Department will provide music scores to the commission.


Specialty: THEORY OF MUSIC

The examination with consists of two parts:

1. Written assignment on the subject selected by the candidate in the field of theory of music, excluding the subject matter of the Bachelors thesis

Finished assignments should be uploaded to the dedicated folder of the CANDIDATE ELECTRONIC FILE the access to which will be provided by the Education and Student Affairs Department to the email address provided in the admission form on the examination day from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 (noon).

Questions to be prepared by the candidates:

1. “Music is the most democratic of the arts” – please interpret the statement by Karol Szymanowski.
2. What are the perspectives available to the theory of music in the context of methodological and cognitive fusions with such fields as composition, musicology, media studies, culture studies, sound studies and other?
3. Theory of music – art or science?

The candidate should answer all the three questions. The answer to each question should last up to three minutes.


Specialty: MUSIC THERAPY

Assessment of the candidates personal characteristics and knowledge, predispositions for performing the profession of music therapist and scientific and research work (written assignment and audio and video recording)

The examination consists of two parts:

1. Written assignment with features of a research paper on a subject previously selected and prepared by the candidate in the field of music therapy, excluding the subject matter of the Bachelor’s thesis

2. Which piece would you like to conduct during your next symphonic concert? Justify your choice.
3. The opening of Symphony No. 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven – is it the conductor's or the orchestra’s problem?

The candidate should answer all the three questions. The answer to each question should last up to three minutes.

The recording constituting the basis of the artistic performance part of the examination must meet the following conditions:

- the audio and video recording must present the instrument and the candidate's face
- recordings without a pianist are permitted
- the recording prepared by the candidate may come from Bachelor's examination, a concert or be prepared in other conditions
- the recording must not be subjected to any form of audio processing or editing. It is permitted to record the respective components (parts) of the programme separately. The technical quality of the recording will not be subject to evaluation.



Programme: VOCAL PERFORMANCE
(FULL-TIME STUDIES AND THE ENGLISH DIVISION)

The commission evaluates the recording of two varied pieces performed by the candidate from different epochs – an opera aria and a piece of choice.

The commission evaluates the recording of two varied pieces performed by the candidate from different epochs – an oratorio, cantata or concert aria and a song.


Specialty: HISTORICAL VOCAL PERFORMANCE

Solo singing

The commission evaluates the recording of two varied pieces performed by the candidate from different epochs (inclusive of Classicism): an aria and a song.

The recording constituting the basis of the artistic performance part of the examination must meet the following conditions:
- the pieces must be performed from memory, with the accompaniment of a piano (or other background music), alternatively a cappella
- the recording prepared by the candidate may come from an examination, a concert or be prepared in other conditions
- the recording must not be subjected to any form of audio processing or editing. The recording may not be older than September 2019. The technical quality of the recording will not be subject to evaluation.

Candidates who will need accompaniment should state so clearly. In such case a pianist (an employee of the Vocal Faculty of AMKL) will contact the candidate and, taking into consideration his/her instructions as to the rhythm, articulation, dynamics and tempo – prepared a recording of the piano background music.

After announcing the point scores for vocal performance, candidates qualified for the subsequent stage should arrange access to a stable Internet connection and a room where they would be able to freely talk and sing during the online conversation with the Academy – on 6 July starting from 2:00 p.m. A detailed schedule of examination hours for each candidate will be provided on an ongoing basis. In justified cases oral examination hours can be adjusted to the candidate’s possibilities.

Admission interview

(for vocal performance and acting and songs and oratorios) will be carried out through the Google Meet platform after the candidate is assigned with an individual email address within the amkl.edu.pl domain. The commission will evaluate the candidate’s cultural knowledge.

Admission interview and test of knowledge related to the programme

(for historical vocal performance) will be carried out through the Google Meet platform after the candidate is assigned with an individual email address within the amkl.edu.pl domain. The commission will evaluate the candidate’s cultural knowledge and issued related to early music.

In the case of the English Division, the entrance examination is held in the English language.



Programme: ART EDUCATION IN THE FIELD OF MUSICAL ART
(FULL-TIME STUDIES)

Specialty: MUSIC EDUCATION WITH INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE DIRECTION AND CULTURAL ANIMATION

  • conducting (two pieces in different styles for an a cappella choir)
  • voice emission: performing a piece of choice with accompaniment or a cappella
  • candidate’s speech (3-5 minutes) related to the programme of studies on the following subjects:

Definition of a cultural organiser, characteristics and social role in the context of the achievements and threats of the 21st century.

It is required to record separately each element of the examination (conducting, voice emission, candidates speech). Choir pieces can be presented with a piano accompaniment, audio recording or with the simultaneous vocal performance of the melodic line. It is also possible to send a recording from a diploma exam or a concert.


Specialty: MUSIC EDUCATION WITH ENSEMBLE DIRECTION AND TEACHING GENERAL MUSIC SUBJECTS AT 1ST DEGREE MUSIC SCHOOLS

  • conducting (two pieces in different styles for an a cappella choir)
  • voice emission: performing a piece of choice with accompaniment or a cappella
  • candidate’s speech (3-5 minutes) related to the programme of studies on the following subjects:

The role of the music teacher in the general secondary school and of the teacher of theoretical subjects in the 1st-degree music school

similarities and differences.

It is required to record separately each element of the examination (conducting, voice emission, candidates speech). Choir pieces can be presented with a piano accompaniment, audio recording or with the simultaneous vocal performance of the melodic line. It is also possible to send a recording from a diploma exam or a concert.


Specialty: CHORAL CONDUCTING

  • conducting (three choir pieces: a capella polyphonic piece by composers of the Renaissance or Baroque; one song composed by Karol Szymanowski from the cycle “Pieśni kurpiowskie (Polish Songs from Kurpie)”; a cappella contemporary choir piece)
  • solo vocal performance (performing a selected Baroque or Classical aria and a song from the 10th or 20th century with an accompaniment or a cappella)
  • candidate’s speech (3-5 minutes) related to the programme of studies on the following subjects:

Polish choral music in the context of the global choral life.

It is required to record separately each element of the examination (conducting, solo singing, candidates speech). Choir pieces can be presented with a piano accompaniment, audio recording or with the simultaneous vocal performance of the melodic line. It is also possible to send a recording from a diploma exam or a concert.



Programme: CHURCH MUSIC (FULL-TIME STUDIES)

- competitive entrance examination – audio and video recordings

  • performing a programme on the organ and presentation of liturgical accompaniment

- Bach’s sonata (opening or closing movement)
- a prelude and a fugue (except for BWV 553-561) or a fantasia/toccata and a fugue by J.S. Bach / D. Buxtehude
- a 19th- or 20th-century piece of choice (or its part)
- presentation of the accompaniment for one verse of a song chosen by the candidate and improvisation on the subject (time: 4-6 minutes, any form),

  • candidate’s speech (3-5 minutes) related to the programme of studies on the following subjects:

The role of a church musician in creating the music culture of the community.

It is required to record separately each element of the examination (examination in the organ and liturgical accompaniment, candidates speech).



POSTGRADUATE STUDIES IN MUSIC THERAPY

Admission is open to graduates of any higher education programme with music knowledge corresponding at least to that after completion of a 1st level music school or an organist training school. The duration of the studies if two years (four semesters).

Classes are held in a part-time form, once a month (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). The students are provided with access to library resources.

Admission criteria:

Professional aptitude assessment

  • On the basis of the audio and video recording sent by the candidate “Why do I wish to study music therapy? Motivations, interests, experiences”.

(by 30 June 2020 at the latest, 3 minutes).

  • On the basis of a written assignment (in the Word text editor, 5400 characters with spaces). The candidate receives 3 subjects and chooses one of them to the email address on 11 July 2020 at 11:00 a.m. The assignment should be sent back on 11 July 2020 by 11:00 a.m.

Examination in theoretical and practical music knowledge

  • On the basis of a completed test in general knowledge of music including the history of music and music rules. The candidate receives the test to the email address on 11 July 2020 at 11:30 a.m. The test should be sent back on 11 July 2020 by 1:30 p.m.
  • On the basis of the audio and video recording with audio and video recordings of the performed musical pieces sent by the candidate (by 30 June 2020 at the latest).

The audio and video recordings, written assignments and tests should be uploaded to the dedicated folder of the CANDIDATE ELECTRONIC FILE the access to which will be provided by the Education and Student Affairs Department to the email address provided in the admission form.

Documents required:

- diploma of higher education (certified copy) and a photocopy of the diploma
- one photo (format as for an ID card)
- diploma of 2nd level music school completion (refers to individuals applying for exemptions from the exam in theoretical and practical knowledge of music).



POSTGRADUATE STUDIES IN SPECIAL AND COMPUTER COMPOSITION, THEATRE AND FILM MUSIC

Admission is open to graduates of any higher education programme. The objective of the studies is a general development of composer’s skills, becoming familiar with various music creation technologies with the use of the computer and the preparation of music compositions for theatre plays and short films. The students are provided with access to library resources.

The studies last four semesters and cover the following subjects:

• special composition

• computer music composition

• theatre and film music composition

• extracurricular classes

Admission criteria:

- review of the submitted compositions
(at least two music scores)

Documents required:

- printed and signed personal data form available on the website amuz.wroc.pl
- diploma of higher education (certified copy) and a photocopy of the diploma
- record of music achievements (compositions, performances of these compositions, possibly with recordings)
- one photo (format as for an ID card)



POSTGRADUATE STUDIES IN TEACHING ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE IN MUSIC EDUCATION

The studies are addressed to graduates of 1st and 2nd level music studies. Their objective is to provide the students with knowledge, competence and practical skills required to teach ensemble performance in 1st level music schools. Based on the concept of ensemble performance implemented as part of the reform of the artistic education system, the studies cover a broad spectrum of related issues: from orchestrating new pieces for children's ensembles through conducting group classes and establishing new relationships between teachers, students and parents. The participants are provided with access to library resources.

The duration of the studies is three semesters, including the following classes:

• fundamentals of instrument science and orchestration for school chamber ensembles

• exercises stimulating activity and creativity during music classes held in groups

• mental and physical development of school-age children

• arranging and evaluation group work

• creating curricula

Admission criteria:

POSTGRADUATE STUDIES IN PRIMARY INSTRUMENTAL TEACHING

The studies are addressed to graduates of 1st and 2nd level music studies. Their objective is to provide the students with knowledge, competence and practical skills required to teach ensemble performance in 1st level music schools. Based on the concepts implemented as part of the artistic education system reform, the studies c cover a broad spectrum of related issues: from the methodology and contemporary techniques of teaching instrument play with specialised music literature through the practice of individual classes based on the knowledge of the child’s mental and physical development.

The participants are provided with access to library resources.

The duration of the studies is three semesters, including the following classes:

• methodology of teaching primary instrumental classes

• contemporary techniques of teaching instrument play

• specialised music schools

• mental and physical development of school-age children

• practice in working with children

POSTGRADUATE MASTER’S STUDIES IN INSTRUMENTAL PERFORMANCE

The studies are intended especially for graduates of Polish and foreign music higher education institutions. Their objective is to develop the students’ skills, teach them new instrumental pieces, including the contemporary interpretation trends, and enable them to master contemporary performance techniques.

The students are provided with access to library resources.

The studies last four semesters and cover the following subjects:

• the main instrument

• work with an accompanist (except for piano, organ, accordion, harpsichord and guitar)

• contemporary performance techniques

• early performance techniques (only for hapsichord and early instruments: Baroque violin, Baroque viola, Baroque cello)

• main-subject literature (only for piano, organ, accordion, harpsichord and guitar)

• stage performance practice

Admission criteria:

- presentation in the form of an audio and video programme of a previously prepared programme consisting of pieces of various epochs and music styles (duration: approx. 30 minutes).



POSTGRADUATE MASTER’S STUDIES IN CHAMBER MUSIC PERFORMANCE

The studies are intended especially for graduates of Polish and foreign music higher education institutions.

Their objective is for the students to develop their performance skills through playing characteristic instrumental chamber music pieces taking into consideration the current interpretation trends.

The students are provided with access to library resources.

The studies last four semesters and cover the following subjects:

• the main instrument

• early performance techniques

• main-subject literature

• stage performance practice

Admission criteria:

- presentation of the prepared programme in the form of an audio and video recording (duration: approx. 30 minutes)



POSTGRADUATE MASTER’S STUDIES IN VOCAL MUSIC PERFORMANCE

The studies are intended especially for graduates of Polish and foreign music higher education institutions.

The objective of the course is for the students to master technical and artistic skills in oratorio and cantata music as well as vocal and opera music. The students are provided with access to library resources.

The studies last four semesters and cover the following subjects:

• solo singing

• working with a coach

• vocal ensembles (one of the following: preparation of oratorios and cantatas, a seminar in Slavic lyricism or a seminar in Western European lyricism)

Admission criteria:

- presentation of the prepared programme in the form of an audio and video recording: two arias, two songs and a piece of choice, including one pieces from the 2nd half of the 20th century.

Programme: Instrumental Performance
Level: second-cycle studies (full-time)

Piano

  • J. S. Bach – Preludium and  Fuga z Das Wohltemperierte Klavier or Toccata
  • F. Chopin – one virtuoso étude
  • One part of a classical sonata
  • A virtuoso piece of choice

The programme should be performed from memory.


Harpsichord

  • One 17th-century piece for key instruments (e.g. G. Frescobaldi, G. Muffat, J. P. Sweelinck, L. Couperin)
  • J. S. Bach – a major harpsichord form (e.g. a partita or a suite)
  • One 18th-century piece for key instruments (F. Couperin, D. Scarlatti, J. P. Rameau)

The programme should be performed on the harpsichord.


Organ

  • A piece or cycle of choice (a suite, mass, partita, variations) from the pre-Bach period
  • One piece by a Polish composer
  • A 19th-, 20th- or 21-century piece of choice


Baroque violin, Baroque viola, viola da gamba

  • The same programme as for first-cycle full-time programme, except that the examination composition should be performed on a Baroque instrument with bowel strings and a Baroque bow


Baroque cello

  • Étude by J. L. Duport, F. Grützmacher, D. Popper, A. Piatti or A. Franchomme (candidate's choice)
  • J. S. Bach: Prelude and dance from one of the Suites: 3,4,5,6 (candidate’s choice)
  • Two parts of a sonata from the late baroque or early Classicism (candidate’s choice)

The programme may be performed without the Baroque cello accompaniment.


Baroque oboe

  • A solo sonata
  • A sonata or concerto

The programme should be performed on the baroque oboe.


Lute

  • Presentation of a 20-minute programme of the choice of the candidates playing one or two kinds of the lute (Renaissance lute, Baroque lute, theorbo, archlute)


Recorder

  • Baroque sonata or suite with basso continuo (can be performed without basso continuo)
  • A piece for solo recorder (candidate's choice)


Flauto traverso

  • A selected solo fantasia from the cycle of 12 Fantasias by G. P. Telemann
  • An Italian or German Baroque sonata
  • A French Baroque suite

The programme should be performed in whole on the flauto traverso.


Violin

The chamber and orchestra performance profile and the solo profile:

  • A capriccio
  • The first part of a violin concerto (in the case of a one-piece concert, the required duration of the recording is 10 minutes)

The programme may be performed without a pianist's participation.


Viola

  • An étude or capriccio
  • The first part of a concerto

The programme may be performed without a pianist's participation.


Cello

  • The first part of a concerto

The programme may be performed without a pianist's participation.


Double bass

  • The first part of a concerto
  • A piece of choice

Guitar

  • Presentation of a 30-minute solo programme (without cuts) consisting of at least two contrasting parts of a sonata or suite form any epoch or variations and a programme of the choice of the candidate

Harp

  • Two contrasting parts of a sonata or concerto
  • A virtuoso piece of choice

The duration of the programme: 20 minutes


Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone

  • A programme of choice consisting of pieces differ in style (at the bachelor’s diploma level)

The maximum duration of the programme: 15 minutes
The programme may be performed without accompaniment.
It is not required to perform the programme from memory.


Trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, euphonium

  • A programme of choice consisting of pieces differ in style (at the bachelor’s diploma level)

The maximum duration of the programme: 15 minutes.
The programme may be performed without accompaniment.
It is not required to perform the programme from memory.


Percussion instruments

  • A programme of choice consisting of études or solo pieces for a snare drum, kettledrums, marimba or vibraphone
  • A repertoire list containing the pieces the candidate studied and performed while doing BA studies

If due to the COVID-19 pandemic the candidates could not practice playing certain instruments, the academy provides for the possibility to accept any repertoire chosen by the candidate, on which they worked during this academic year of 2019-2020. The repertoire list should be placed in the dedicated ELECTRONIC CANDIDATE FOLDER.

It is not required to perform the programme from memory.


Accordion

  • A programme of choice consisting of pieces differ in style (at the bachelor’s diploma level)

The maximum duration of the programme: 15 minutes.

Saxophone

  • Jazz standards selected by the candidate, differing in tempo, style and character with at least one performed with accompaniment


Trumpet

  • Jazz standards selected by the candidate, differing in tempo, style and character with at least one performed with accompaniment
  • Improvisation based on the harmonic progression, in a specific style and form

 

Trombone

  • Jazz standards selected by the candidate, differing in tempo, style and character with at least one performed with accompaniment
  • Improvisation based on the harmonic progression, in a specific style and form


Guitar      

  • The jazz standard All the things you are performed with improvised parts, improvising a piece for guitar based on the harmonic progression
  • A composition in any style performed by a guitar, double bass and percussion trio or solo

  • Two jazz standards selected by the candidate, differing in tempo, style and character; performance in various styles and corresponding bass lines – walking/swing, latin, funk, blues, etc.
  • Improvisation based on the harmonic progression, in a specific style and form


Percussion

  • Jazz standards selected by the candidate, differing in character and demonstrating their ability to skilfully use drumsticks and brushes in various styles and dynamics
  • Performing a specific rhythmic progression and improvising a stylistically and formally defined part of a piece
