The Big-Band

The Big-Band of the Karol Lipiński  Academy of Music in Wrocław was established by dr hab. Aleksander Mazur – the long-standing Head of the Institute of Jazz Music at the Instrumental Faculty. The Big-Band was formed in 1993, consisting of young saxophone, trumpet, trombone players and the rhythm section (piano, double bass and percussion), all students of the jazz music specialty at the Wrocław Academy. The academic Big Band refers to the tradition of American big bands, so its repertoire mainly includes standards by Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller in the original and updated arrangements. Each year, the group makes several performances at the Academy, primarily as part of the traditional series called Zaduszki Jazzowe (All Souls' Day Jazz Meetings) and Bukiet dla Pań (A Bouquet for the Ladies) on Women’s Day celebrated in March. The Big Band has received numerous awards in national jazz contests, and its popularity extends far beyond the band's alma mater.

The renowned artists who have performed with the band include Krystyna Prońko, Piotr Wojtasik, Henryk Miśkiewicz, Piotr Dziubek and Krzysztof Urbański. The Big Band's concerts are an opportunity to present the skills and talents of not only its members, but also Academy students and graduates performing in smaller jazz bands.

The music director of the AMKL Big Band is dr Bartosz Pernal.
