On the day of the Feast of Science in Wrocław, rectors of Wrocław's public universities declare their joint efforts to strengthen the city's position as a European centre of intellect and culture. They pledge to cooperate in attracting talent, combining academic potential to meet the challenges of today, improve the quality of life and support the development of a society based on knowledge and innovation. They declare to defend the independence of science and the arts and to counter disinformation and censorship. .
They call on the cooperation of the city and regional authorities, offering their support in daily activities and crisis situations to make Wrocław an even more open and welcoming place for creative initiatives.
Wrocław, a city at a crossroads, has been a meeting place for different nations and cultures for a thousand years. Its academic history dates back to the founding of the Leopoldine Academy in 1702, making it a centre of free thought and innovative ideas.
Fourteen Nobel Prize winners have become part of the city's intellectual tradition. Today's universities of Wrocław, heirs to the traditions of Lviv and Breslau, are modern centres of science and education, promoting universal European values. Eleven public universities, two institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea and more than 100,000 students and doctoral students contribute to the dynamic character of a city that combines science, culture and innovation, as emphasised in the Academic Manifesto of Wrocław.
